Page numbering on a new document needs to start at an arbitrary number. This is
done by inserting the page number field on the page, double-clicking on the page
number and setting the page offset to a number, say 9. If the resulting number
is greater than the number of physical pages on the document, the contents of
the page number field are not displayed resulting in a blank field.

If the resulting number is smaller, pages are numbered correctly until the
logical page number is equal to the number of physical pages. From there on, the
field becomes blank again.
