In the control panel there are 298 fonts. After reading your question I disabled most extensions, leaving the following active -Optimization Solver -postgresql-sdbc-0.7.5 -svg-import-1.2.2
Now it responds in 1 second but if have no spell checking. re-enabling the built-in spelling and hyphenation dictionaries extension and restarting I have spell checking and the problem stays away. It appears it must be one of the other extensions. None of these were installed by me, and came with the default installation.
