I have the same problem, the 'snd_ac97_clock' argument probably works not on my chipset (MSI MS-6380 K7T266 Pro motherboard). The only way to get 'clear sound' from mp3 seems to use xmms with its crossfade plugin, and set Sample rate to 48kHz (in Output table). (I tried (alsa 0.9+0beta7-2 with 2.4
