Michael, Thank you for the asound.state you attached. I tried it, and now I can hear the background noise - but still no useful sound. Neither PCM (using alsaplayer with an MP3), nor CD pass-through... Funny because Alsa 0.5 with 2.4.9 and below used to work like charm for many months... Any

Ismail, I had a similar problem with an Intel 815e motherboard. The problem turned out to be that the chipset would literally "disable" the sound ability if speakers weren't plugged into the sound connector on the motherboard. It sounds crazy, but its true and reproducable. When Alsa was start
