I hope someone else jumps in here since I am at the limits of my knowledge.
I certainly do not think that you should recompile your kernel. You should
make sure that the kernel source you are using is the source
(kernel-source*.i386.rpm) is for the kernel you are running. However, the

Hello Bill,
Thanks for responding. I do not know if I am using the same version of gcc.
The kernel got updated automatically through RHEL. Do I need to recompile
the kernel myself to make sure this works? (And if so, where do I start...)
Thank you,
Jason

Hello,
I had alsa running back with the standard kernel release of RHEL 4, with a
Sound Blaster Live 24-bit card running the ca0106 driver but since updating
my kernel to 2.6.9-42.EL I have not been able to compile the driver (I
haven't tried anything passed that, since I know I need the driver

Hi,
I have some problems to get spdif working on my machine.
# aplay -D spdif /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav
aplay: main:550: audio open error: No such file or directory
But this works:
# aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav

Does anyone know if the AD1988B cards are supported by ALSA? I want to
buy this motherboard
(http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1283&l1=3&l2=101&l3=300)
but it comes with this SupremeFX soundcard that from what I can tell
uses the aformentioned AD1988B chipset. Google showed m

Does ALSA mute my beeper?
When I compile pcspkr into my kernel (2.6.17.8), I get during booting a
beep when the pcmcia-subsystem is started.
When I compile it as a module, no beep during booting, as it is not yet
loaded. So far so good.
In any case, after the sound modules have been loaded,
