I have an option of installing any one of the music distros, eg Studio64 (I
haev a pentium D proessor) -- or others like gentoo you have mentioned.

You can use alsaplayer, it is jack-aware. Try "alsaplayer -i gtk -d jack".
Otherwise MhWaveEdit and ReZound are also jack-aware and there is a plug-in
for Xmms.

cards" list

Just wanted to report progress that I've experienced with RC1.
When headphones are plugged in, speakers auto-mute and headphones auto-unmute.
When headphones are unplugged, speakers unmute.
Volume is good. Quality is good. I have not tested capture/recording.
