Sergei,
I am not familiar enough with what I need to say I must have Jack. In fact,
I can playback a simple WAV file by "ecasound -i songmept1.wav -o:alsahw"
just fine. I think my Alsa system is OK, I was thinking I'd need Jack to
allow me to impement signal processing using tools like bruteF
Ronan,
by the way, be careful regarding bruteFIR - it might be not
good for concert performances, and the matter is latency.
It is still good for home listening from CDs, etc.
The solution would be an IIR-based equalizer, and its
advantages/disadvantages compared to a FIR is a separate topic.

I've installed ecasound, and it has many features I know I'll eventually use
once I can figure out my basic issue with the playback chain.
when playing back a WAV file thru ecasound using Jack, as before with other
tools, I get choppy / distorted audio.
I'm beginning to think t

Sergei,
Thank you -- you are correct. My major challenge for live audio / sound
does not have anything to do with WAV files -- but everything to do with
sound reinforcement and in my case mostly outdoor concert PA systems.
I am sorry I failed to clearly and simply explain that earlier.
If I ca
Hello Bill, All,
Very sorry for the incomplete description of what I want to end up doing.
By the way, my time frame is a couple months.
This is eventually for control and management of "live" music as in running

Ronan,
I have no experience with those sound oriented distros except a brief stay
with Planet CCRMA. My experience with CCRMA led me to believe that those
distros are excellent if that is all you need. But if you need other things
on your pc because you also use it for more general purpose work
I've installed OpenSuse 10.2, and I can't seem to get Jamin to work:
I try to start jackit and get a problem with a plugin not found (even though
it's actually on my disk):

Hello ALSA users,
I just installed a SB Live! 24-bit card (SB0410) into a Dell Server 1950
running Redhat Enterprise Linux ES, with kernel 2.6.9. For CA0106
support, I upgraded ALSA from 1.0.6 to 1.0.13 by compiling the sources
for the drivers, libraries and utilities.
I am able to hear live sou

This is the result using plughw as you suggest:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aplay -D plughw:1,0 /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/pop.wav' : Si
