I have the same controller on my PC, the "output" jack on my main board
is not the "master" output as you would expect but the "headphone"
output and thus the "headphone" master is the correct master fader. If
you using kmix or gamix then you can change the toolbar fader to be the
head
I have a K7VT4APro mainboard.
It has VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
(rev 60), as reported by lspci.
The problem is, the "master" volume looks to be dead - the volume of
sound doesn't change at all if I move it up or down, or even disable it
completely.

AFAIK, spdif passthrough never worked correctly.
At some point it did work on my machine, it was with the same kernel
and the same alsa release. Which is rather puzzling.
