Using debian unstable with kernel 2.6.23-rc6 I get absolutely no sound
output on my Vaio.
At bootup these messages appear:

I am trying to use the spdif coaxial input of the layla24,
but the vu-meter of echomixer does not show any input level
for that channel (other channels i/o are ok)

I did but the code is too complex for me to learn from. I want something
simple. I don't need a 'Swiss Army Knife'. Arecord and aplay work very
well but I need to learn 'How to'. Only need wav support.
