What hardware are you running? I have had this problem with my toshiba
laptop using an intel hda card which I fixed using the howto (which I
can't find to post atm). Post your hardware, then we can see where we'll
get to. (and I'll try and find that link regardless.)

There's one annoying inconvinience with snd_intel8x0 driver for Fujitsu
Siemens P7010 laptop. For whatever reason, the sound volume is
controlled only via the Headset volume. The setting of master does not
play any role. Since all of the desktop environments manipulate the

Well I found that when I am using runlevel 3 your solution is working
but not in runlevel 5. So I decided to reinstall Open Suse and to try
to see what is happening (are ATI drivers or something else
responsable). After basic opensuse installation (alsa 1.0.14) your

chanel swap outputs
Alsamixer's LFE slider control sub and center slider doesn't do anything
alsa -1.0.14
