I experienced similar troubles just a while back with my Realtek ALC662
chip. I'm not claiming to understand why, but it turned out I needed to
add the following to my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-dig

I have an X-Fi Titanium that I'm using with S/PDIF input and output, and
I've found what I hope is an ALSA bug and not a hardware design flaw.
The problem is that it appears to be impossible to do capture on the
"S/PDIF-i" control without unmuting it. Surely this can't be the
intended behavior.

I have an HP Elitebook 2540p running Gentoo Linux.
There is no sound using the kernel drivers (2.6.34-gentoo-r1).
