Whats your CPU? maybe you have activated some outdated cpufreq option (Example,
my N330 will work with p4-clockmod, but give very bad performance)
If you play a sound using aplay, you just shove the already right formatted pcm
into the soundcard. no work for the CPU.

when I execute "aplay -D plug:hdmi /usr/share/shounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" or
"aplay /usr/share/shounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" the sound is crystal clear.
if i play anything else the sound quality is poor: browser, mp3, dvd, etc...
