Sorry this is a long post, but with earlier kernel I didn't have this
problem.
Card hw0:0 is a M audio D66 and functions OK, but with this app and some
others I'm getting a lot of error messages on startup, and when cthe
device hw0:0 device 0 is selected it fails and drops back to it default

can't be more than a couple years old though.
I don't think pulseaudio is the problem. If I use pasuspender to run
things like speaker-test direct to ALSA, I get even *worse* results--I
