Hi folks, I am experiencing problems with the onboard-soundchip on my Asus A8V mainboard. The chip is a VIA8237 with 5.1 capabilities.
I used this chip all the time, and recently I finally bought a 5.1 speaker-set to enjoy DVDs with thrilling sound. Anyway: I connected the speaker-system to the cinch-jacks on the backside of my computer. I checked the wiring a few times to be sure that I didn't do anything wrong, but all that trying didn't solve my problems. Problem #1: When playing stereo sources (mp3/ogg via PCM, TV-sound via the soundcard's line-in) I only hear sound on the rear-speakers. Subwoofer, Center and Front speakers don't emit any noise. Problem #2: When watching DVDs offering 5.1-sound with xine (which has the "Surround 5.1" output selected, of course) I can hear sound on the rear-speakers, center-speaker and subwoofer) -- also, the front-speakers remain dead. Yes, I know what you're about to say ;) ... - Yes, the front left/right speakers are wired correctly. I can hear them playing when simply exchanging the front and rear input into my 5.1-system. I read many things when searching in the internet - but none of these problems fit my situation very well. So my last idea was to ask "The Professionals" in the hope they have some ideas what to check. The drivers I use are the ones delivered with the 2.6.15-kernel. However, I also tried the "external" drivers (version 1.0.10) with no success.
