without a default alsa.conf, plughw doesn't exist.
It is composed of the plug on top of hw.
On my system it is defined in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf
you might try

I now have to find how to setup the 8 outputs...
I guess you'd need to use channels 8 instead of channels 4
What I'm looking at is to be able to play differents sounds to different
outputs.
A variation on this recipe may help:

See http://www.alsa-project.org/ 1.0.18a is the most current.

Something based on this may work for you - I know it works for a single
user. I don't know whether there are reasons that it won't work for
multiple users.

Look for section Plugin: Multiple streams to One

Greetings.
can anyone tell me how to find out which processes are using an ALSA
driver and preventing it from being unloaded.
I know that lsof /dev/snd will tell me who has these files open, but
often this shows nothing and still the driver can't be unloaded.
Where else should I look?

Hi Karl,
When you said
The linux kernel is no longer accepting closed firmware blobs
did you mean to imply that this is new policy?
If so, can you give a reference to where this is documented eg LKML
archive reference.
thanks and regards
