I've just installed a new Audiophile 2496 in my RedHat 8.0 box, and I've
set up the 0.9.0rc6 drivers properly as far as I can tell. Sound output
is OK in most apps (gnome-cd, xmms), however, sound fails to initialise in
quake3-engined games (RTCW and quake3 itself) with the error message

fine with 0.9.10 ALSA drivers ... however the quality of the bass is
very poor, especially compared to the bass produced by the CMI8378 card

I've just installed the latest beta ALSA drivers, and I can't seem to
get esd to intercept sound streams. A `ps -A | grep esd` reveals that
it is in fact running, yet I can't play multiple sources simultaneously
and the GNOME esd-panel-applet shows no activity when sounds are

to get this issue sussed. I've just got an AudioExcel AV512 (CMI8737
chipset - cmipci driver), and I'm trying to get multiple sound sources
simultaneously a-la-esd using the latest and greatest beta ALSA drivers
(0.9.10).
