Try making the Focusrite the primary device. This worked for me under
somewhat similar circumstances.

James, thank you for your advice, I feel considerably more enlightened. I
intend to go down to a local computer audio supplier (Millenium Music)
tomorrow afternoon and see what they've got and maybe twiddle a few knobs.
