Hi,

How can I get the Alsa 0.5.11 drivers to work with kernel compiled with
devfs?

I followed the INSTALL instructions on installing the driver for kernels
supporting devfs but could not get the driver to work. I tried disabling
devfs for /dev/snd/* and /dev/sound in /etc/devfsd.conf. Then I modified
snddevices to trigger a static devices installation.

Well, this worked the first time. However, the moment I rebooted the
machine, it no longer worked. The snd modules were loaded into memory.
However, ESound refused to load. When I tried mpg123, it complained there
was no device /dev/audio. A ls of /dev showed /dev/audio was there.

When I tried to unload and reload the snd drivers, the process took quite a
long time to complete. However, there was no error message.

Can anyone please provide some pointers on how to get the alsa drivers to
work with a devfs kernel. Alternatively, is there some FAQ for this
problem --- I couldn't find any so far.

Thanks.

Cheers!
Jeremy
