Hello Everyone,
Well, I finally got the time to try to get alsa running. Note the
keyworkd TRY as I've gotten quite frustrated up to this point. I have a
Toshiba Satellite 4060XCDT with a Maestro 2E and a RH7.2 w/ 2.4.19-pre3:

lspci -> 00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ES1978
Maestro 2E (rev 10)

So... I configured and installed all of alsa-driver, alsa-lib,
alsa-util, alsa-oss and changed maestro to snd-es1968 in my modules.conf
only to find that my laptop wouldn't make a peep anymore!! :) cds don't
play xmms (with alsa-xmms plugin) doesn't play... nothing... BTW I DO
have all the mixer setting up max to the hilt! :)

lsmod verifies that snd-es1968 and a slew of others have been loaded but
looking around the /proc I've found some weird stuff...
/proc/asound/:

Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.9.0beta12 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux laptop.sowka.com 2.4.19-pre3 #8 Sun Mar 17 10:08:25 EST
2002 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
ESS ES1978 (Maestro 2E) at 0xfc00, irq 11

Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices:
0: MPU-401 (UART)

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

EMULATION CODE !?!?!? HUH

Anyhoo as you can see I'm lost... ANY suggestion or help are MUCH
appreciated. Thank You,
Mike
