'make install' DID finish without errors? This looks like the modules
didn't get installed in /lib/modules/2.4.20-18.19. If you
ls -al /lib/modules/2.4.20-18.19/kernel/sound/pci you should find the file
snd-via82xx.o, otherwise they didn't install!

This maybe a stupid suggestion, but did you do 'make install' while
running the correct kernel?
The installer looks at the running kernel to determine what directory
to place the modules in in the /lib/modules directory
