The current Debian for alsa-base is 0.9.3c, and that's what I have loaded, but the current alsa-modules for my system is at 0.9.3a+1. I realize I ought to update the modules, but I wonder if this is really my problem.

After going to 0.9.3c for alsa-base, I suddenly discovered that several programs stoped working properly. In particular, "xine," which used to work well with ALSA, gives a slew of error codes:

> libmad: ALERT input buffer too small (2279 bytes, 0 avail)!

prints out continuously, while

> xine: pcm.c:889: snd_pcm_delay: Assertion `pcm' failed.

prints out when I close the xine window. I had other problems with xmms, which at first wouldn't work at all; I tweaked the settings a few times and it seemed to settle down. Finally, "arecord" no longer works unless I specifically tell it to use hw:0,1 -- and I'm pretty certain I didn't need to do that before. If I use the default, I get *silent* failure -- no recording, not even a blank file. Not to mention that I can't set hw:0,1 to record at anything like the 41000 it should be able to provide.

Comments? I find this baffling.
