What are the contents of /proc/asound/car
I have the exact same problem right now but with an MSI nvidia 9400GT card.

Hi all. I have since managed to figure out my headphone issues; however, the
HDMI port, presumably coming off my NVidia GTX280M card, doesn't get detected by
the snd_hda_intel driver. I have tried compiling the modules for all available
HDMI codecs,
