does the master volume have influence on any of outputs?
or, only the headphone volume affects?

ok, please check whether the pci subsystem id of your device is
1462:5470 (see lspci -nv).
if it's ok, the attached patch should fix the problem.

I have been having the same "problem" with my also intel8x0 onboard card all the time 
I have used ALSA. My 
pci subsystem id is 1462:5290 and card details are pci subsystem id.
The master control has no effect while the headphone control controls all volumes like 
the PCM control.
