I'm using Debian unstable, I have alsa 1.0.16. At least that's what I think,
from what dpkg -l | grep alsa shows. I have:
alsa-base 1.0.16-1.1
alsa-utils 1.0.16-1
And /proc/asound/version

Use the tab key to toggle between playback/capture/all view modes. Or
start alsamixer with a view switch: alsamixer -V capture
or alsamixer -V all.

Debian is called libasound and didn't show up in dpkg -l | grep alsa, but
it's 1.0.16 too:
