I have an Ensoniq 1371 board on a Linux box running kernel 2.4.18. Everything seems to be OK, in that all the drivers are loaded and I can play sounds all right. There are a few issues though, which were not present when using ALSA 0.5:
1) The board is reset to some (default, I guess) values on rebooting, despite of the fact that I have a post-install snd-mixer /usr/sbin/alsactl restore line in my /etc/modules.conf. This is not a big deal, for I can invoke the alsactl command from one of the local boot files, but I wonder why the post-install line doesn't seem to be doing anything? 2) When doing (as root) /usr/sbin/alsactl restore the following message is printed: alsactl: set_control:960: Cannot write control '3:0:0:IEC958 Playback Mask:0' : Operation not permitted I have no clue what this means. The relevant entry in /etc/asound.state reads control.33 { comment.access 'read write' comment.type IEC958 iface PCM name 'IEC958 Playback Mask' value ffffffff00000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000 } I have used a few different values for the value field, but they don't seem to make much of a difference. I don't know what this IEC958 business is all about, anyway; I would be happy if somebody can enlighten me here, and let me know what are the appropriate values to use. 3) This one is annoying. I am using Gnome 1.4.1, and when I log in (from the Gnome display manager gdm) if the board settings are the right ones (as stored in my asound.state file) then the welcoming tune starts playing all right, but gets interrupted half way through. On immediately checking the board settings I notice that they are reset to their default values, as when rebooting. Such values mute most channels - in particular, the PCM channel. I can invoke alsactl restore by hand from an xterm all right, and from that point onwards the sound works fine under Gnome. I am at a loss so as to why the board is reset when starting my Gnome session. I am aware that this is really not an ALSA question - although it did not happen with the ALSA 0.5 drivers, and my Gnome configuration has remained unchanged. Anyway, any pointers on this issue would be greatly appreciated. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
