Hi all.

Firstly I appologise for posting what I think is an mplayer problem to the alsa-user list.
I haven't received a response from my post to the mplayer list, and I'm hoping someone here has come across the same problem as me.

On one system, mplayer no longer works with the -ao alsa9 switch, but works with -ao oss. This is a little concerning, but not as bad as my other box...

I've just set up a box with a 2.6.3-gentoo kernel ( everything compiled with gcc-3.3.3 on problem box, and with gcc-3.3.2 on half-working box ) and have aplay, mpg123 and xmms working ( xmms tested with alsa output and oss output ). It's working as root and as a user, with no problems at all.

When I try mplayer with either -ao alsa9 or -ao oss I get the incredibly descriptive:

Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.

This is also the error I get on the other box when I try the alsa output plugin.

Does anyone know what the problem is?
