[For the people I've CC'ed: this might interest you. Read quoted message
below for context.]

Hi all,

So I downloaded the emu10k1 tools, screwed around with them a bit and
now got my sound working. This is with the OSS drivers, but I will
explain what I did anyway, it might be helpful for ALSA also.

The emu10k1 init script initializes the card with a bunch of routes and
other things that I don't really understand, but it also adds a +12db
boost to the PCM route. I removed that boost from the PCM route and
added it to the Front route. So basically all sound to the Front
speakers output gets a boost and not just PCM.

This results in (a) my sound being as loud as in Windows and (b) I don't
get ugly distortion if I max out the PCM volume and neither if I now max
out the main volume.

Note that the SBLive also has a hardware switch to enable a boost on the
Front output. I have the hardware boost diabled in my setup. If I enable
it together with the other boost then the sound gets distorted and the
hardware boost alone is not enough.

I hope this message is helpful to others who have the same problem as
me. I've also CCed the emu10k1 developers so that maybe they can change
the default script to always boost the Front output and not PCM.

Cheers,

- Frank
