I tried changing to the ALSA driver, but the problem did not go away.
Further, the sound was awfully staticky and dropped out quite
frequently.
If you have any other ideas let me know...

or Kohan under wine, the sound is highly accelerated. This does not
happen with any native applications. (such a RTCW or Tuxracer or mpg123,
