Hello, I'm trying to get sound working correctly on an amd athlon xp 1600+.
running debian unstable. (2.4.20-3-k7 kernel image)

cat /proc/pci shows:

Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 64).

I've installed alsa (0.9.4-1) (and the appropriate alsa modules for this kernel), and everything seems to be configured correctly. Alsa seems to start up correctly. I can play sounds, etc. (Except there's no sound output due to every mixer channel being muted). However, after unmuting appropriate channels, all sound related processes hang. Xmms crashes, "play"/sox hangs, and no sound is output. I've been working with this issue for several days now, and it's got me completely stumped (especially since I've got the exact same chipset in a laptop, and I got my sound working beautifully). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Robert Zeigler
