All had several responses to this, but the way that worked the best was to treat it as an smbclient. 'root' had access to the device on the nfs mount, but it still didn't seem to like it. Maybe I should upgrade the 2.4.2p2 and try again, but at the moment it works so i shan't fix it :-)
