I've been using amanda for some time now, generally with great success.
However, a couple of weeks ago the backups started taking much, much longer
to run. To give you an idea, a typical run time was between 3 and 4 hours.
It's now taking anywhere between 15 and 25 hours!

success was do to changes that the release would make it into the
stable releases first. My last attempt was with
2.4.4p4, the last stable realease, and this was built from a beta

I don't have much experience working with Samba.
My test on the Unix server was:
# cat testfile.txt | smbclient -M window-name
I received a pop up with testfile.txt contant.
however when I type:
# smbclient -L window-client-name -N
I get the following error message:
