Matt, you're amazing. I don't know which of the two commands did it, but
it works now, at least minimally.
I didn't know about the chkconfig command; I'll have to investigate it.
I HUPped xinet with 'kill HUP ' and also
'/etc/init.d/xinet reload', but that might not have done the same as
'service

I have the same problem with clients which have more than one network
interface. Amanda will not work unless I force the server to connect
to the clients' primary IP by modifying /etc/hosts and
/etc/nsswitch.conf to "files dns".
