I've done a bit of testing using the amtape command, and get the
following results:
# su -c amtape daily device amanda
changer: got exit: 0 str: 1 /dev/nst0
/dev/nst0
# su -c amtape daily current amanda
changer: got exit: 0 str: 1 2 1
changer_query: changer
I neglected to mention, that if I then insert the next tape, I get:
# su -c amtape daily show amanda
changer: got exit: 0 str: 1 2 1
changer_query: changer return was 2 1
changer_query: searchable = 0
amtape: scanning all 2 slots in tape-changer rack:
changer_find: looking for NULL changer is

I thought that as well and tried to change it to one slot in chg-manual
(firstslot=1 and lastslot=1), but with the same result.
I've now tried to direct the output from chg-manual to
/var/log/chg-manual.log instead of to /dev/tty, as per Dustin's
suggestion, but it doesn't work yet:
