so im doing a few more tests right now and for this i have cloned and upgraded
my backup machine from Jessie to Stretch.
Here is what i have now:
$ smbclient --version Version 4.4.3-Debian, amadmin-3.3.8

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be so much movement
to fix the Samba problem right now ...
I'm still on the old Samba version.
