If you run up2date-config, you can add tar* to the PkgSkipList or whatever they
call it to preven up2date from updating tar.

I've had similar problems in the past for unknown reasons. In several instances
running amverify on the tape in question has been enough to correct
the problem and allow me to restore.

Our solution here is to have amanda send the email to itself (via the mailto
option in our amanda.conf file). The amanda account has a procmail filter that
saves a copy to a local file and forwards another copy on to the required
persons.
