After some fiddling and a complete powerdown WITHOUT inserted tape
(important as it seems ...) it works again. Phew.

I see problems with amcheck here.
32bit Gentoo Linux, Kernel 3.0.3, amanda 3.3.0
Tried with 2 different tapes to rule out defectiv media (LTO-2).
amcheck fails and lets amcheck-device hang there, hard or not to kill,
only via booting.
