have V6, V10, and V17 tapes. Besides under using the v10 and v17, is
there any other way to fit different tape capacities into amanda scheduling?

Depending on how many of each you have, you could make a separate config for
each. Or possibly just use them for archives. I think it would be impossible
for planner to level out daily runs if you didn't know what size tapes were
going to appear.

need to replace the 8 gig tapes with the 20's or can

I would be willing to bet that you could use..them but since the config
specifies the tape size, you would only be using the limits of the
previous size. I would say add the tapes in your rotation and adjust
your tape size to reflect the new tapes. And remove the the 8GB tapes
