Objects in quarantine are autoerased when they are three months old.
We have done this for a couple of years, and we have no problems with
the user base (about 5000 with very varying degree of computer knowledge).

and fill /var/amavis/tmp with 30 GB of half processed emails.
The main problem is that file dumped core, but shouldn't amavisd-new
give up on an email when it has failed several thousand times in a
short time span?

Those four categories are the ones with negative values as default.

Using Tomcat
Just following up with what seemed to solve the problem.
Changing to manual (cron) bayes expiry in spamassassin.
We have no LMTP timeouts after that change.
