I recently acquired an HBR-13C in stunning condition. The HBR-13C was described
in QST magazine 1965, a 13 tube superhetrodyne receiver, that anyone with (and
these are my words) 'above average skills' can build :) Its designer, Ted
Crosby, achieved near cult status as a result of his HBR
Hi all,
This is off topic, but a wonderful vacuum tube
based clock is presented at the following link:

a labor of love not unlike what we do with our AM
equipment.

Hi all,
Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm wondering how the
directionality of a ferrite rod works. Basically, how do I point it to
a source? Should the radio wave propagation direction be parallel or
perpendicular to the ferrite rod?

Check this out:

Plexiglass case).
A CRT, vector-display clock. The 'guts' are solid-state, but the
display is cool - plus the contruction time is quite a bit less.
The Nixie Wristwatch is also fairly cool.
Hi Conor,
A ferrite rod antenna should be perpendicular to
the oncoming signal wavefront, and also
perpendicular to its electrical field (or parallel
to its magnetic field). Because you would
ordinarily be close to the ground with a loopstick
radio, signals will tend to be vertically
polarized
Excellent! Thanks for all the info guys!

snip Ferrite is useful up to the megahertz range, and
some ferrites are even useful to UHF and beyond.
My old Tandberg portable radio uses the ferrite up to 5 mhz then the
telescoping vert. above that.

Group,
After much thought and fiddling around I finally had to surgically remove the
outer bakelite knob. The three screws that held the knob on could not be coaxed
out. This was an older model with only one set screw.
Once I had that removed I was able to wedge out the knob with some shim

Bill,
Give a small tunable loop a try.

Hi guys and gals,I need a replacement AGC pot/switch ,this is also known
as ALC, it's a all in one pot / push-pull switch. I have been unable to
locate a part number to cross-reference. The pot is 100 k with a push
pull switch. Any help would be really appreciated...
