This is a new discovery?
AFAIK this has been the way it has always been. A lot of the radios
used in the Heavy Metal Rally have been traditionally commercial
broadcast radios converted to the Amateur Radio Bands.
Also the re-use of Military Surplus equipment as the BC-610.

I guess it is what it is. I just thought it might be fun to use the CE-20A on
SSB because on AM it won't get very far
Maybe I'll just have to use CW.
Thanks Bob!

The CE20 setup does not qualify on SSB and would
only qualify on AM if it had the weight limit
which I believe is over 800 lbs. The CE20 as an AM
driver to a BIG AMP would qualify. You will hear
lots of great AM signals with up to 5 KW McMartin
and RCA rigs on. 500 watts almost does not make it

Any club or group or individual can create a contest any way they want.
For example: Ron H, you could create a rally where only left handed banjo
players with a CE-20A can participate and it would be
Ron,
IF you find a way to make it meet the rules - a rig weighing 250 pounds
or running at least 250 watts - then join the free for all.
It is simply what the rules have been. I could NOT participate UNTIL I
procured a BC-610.
It really has nothing to do with vintage, as it can be a
For those who want to operate vintage or classic equipment in AM, SSB or CW,
the Classic Exchange CX is the contest to enter. The next event will be
February 15, 2009 for phone and January 25, 2009 for CW. Check out the website
at

I see it happen sometimes. I don't know what causes it. It is most
likely a mis-routing that occurs somewhere, and we get dupes.

I think you all misunderstood! I wasn't complaining about the rules, just
thought it was a bummer that I couldn't play on SSB. I guess if I really want
to play, I'll fire up the R390 and T3. As a station, they might be on the low

Actually,
If you use the 20A to drive a linear amplifier, such as the Johnson
Thunderbolt, you would have a quite substantial AM signal, at about
350 watts of carrier. In the CW mode the power output, can exceed 500 watts,
just a matter of how you are set up for the Event.
