To all you AO-7 fans. We appear to have a sick bird. We should feel blessed in
having such a well performing satellite for several years, considering it is
older than some of it's users. The audio is distorted and cw sounds bad,

Thirty-five years ago this Sunday (15 November), AO-7 reached orbit. The
following is from the AO-7 page on the AMSAT-NA Web site:

notice how much activity it gets from our European friends, as compared with
the U.S. From many parts of the U.S some good DX can be had. Even from way
over here in Seattle I can work a "piece" of Europe.
The AO-7 pass just concluded here reached maximum elevation of 31 degrees
to the wesf of my QTH (DM41lu), and the satellite was in Mode V/A (also
called Mode A). With about 100 watts EIRP my downlink signal was RST 589 but I
had the passband to myself. Nothing but me and the beacon, which was
I had a nice Mode A QSO with Brent, VA5MS, on the 1407-1427 pass this
morning. Also heard KC9ELU but the bird was a bit far to the west for him.
AO-7 will be in Mode A for most of SKN, so get those 10-meter antennas ready!

The Eclipse Cycle has begun for satellite Ao-7.
Typically what this means is that the satellite will lose all power and
by default go into "Start-Up" mode every time it comes back into the
sunlight. Typically Mode B or C are the 1st mode of operations and the

Down here in Australia at times we have experienced it were AO-7 would change
modes mid pass during a non eclipse period. This was not due to to many
stations but just the 24 hour time kicking in. You could follow the 24 hour
period on http://oscar.dcarr.org.

only Larry-WA6DIR and me on both his and my downlink was almost
uninteligible. Tried lowest power and Larry tried switching polarity. Any

I notice when AO-7 is out there at 4000km I can notice the delay in cw from my
monitor to the 8000km round trip to and from AO-7. Kind of shades of AO-40
(sobsob) when the delay was really noticable, and when we listened to ourselves
(ssb) we had to turn down the rx volume a little as no to s

I've just been listening to AO-7. The 10m beacon was off and I couldn't
raise a signal through the transponder. But I did hear the 70cm beacon
and it was only transmitting a constant carrier (no RTTY or CW this time).
Any of the old hands know what would cause this?
I copied 2E1EUB and MM5AJW on the latest AO-7 pass. Was not quick enough on
the return etc to get them. First time I heard anything other that
Mika-OH8MBN. So you European stations help me to streetch the footprint.

Just got off AO-7, it really sounds not too good. Weak and distorted audio.
Like not enough voltage from the 35 year old solar cells. Heard eveything from
response to a CME event to being in mode C to being hit by whatever. The audio
distortion does not depend on the uplink power,

AO-7 has normally switched modes every other day
except during periods of eclipse when it stays in
Mode B. On June 8th, it was in Mode A as predicted,
however, when it was supposed to switch to Mode B
between 0200 and 0500 on June 9th, the AO-7 log reported
that it was heard in Mode B at 0407z by

The AO-7 Mode A pass on 9/18/10 at approximately 1430 UTC (POS with 14 degs

contacts but it doesn't work.
Does anybody know of a real time/near time reflector for scheduling more

Saw a post a few days ago regarding AO-7 Mode change.
Today 13 Jan, 2011 the mode changed from A to B at 23:28z.
Seems like it is getting later as time progresses. Last time I noted a changes
was back in late Novenber at about 23:23z and in mid December at 23:25z.

Five days into it's eclipse season, AO-7 is operating very well.
Strong Mode B signals on the last pass over eastern North America. I
worked PV8DX, N8RO, KV1J (his first AO-7 QSO), and KB1RVT. My 25 watts
ERP was plenty until the satellite started going behind the trees to
the north.

AO-7 seems to be showing some odd behavior. For about three weeks of the
eclipse cycle, it had been operating perfectly in Mode B with strong and
clear signals on each and every pass. However, yesterday it was off during
two ascending passes over the United States. It was back in Mod

Hopefully this is just a temporary condition due to sun angles at this
point in it's orbit.

I have listened several times and never heard the CW beacon, so that's neat.
The channel 6D value shows the telemetry to be nothing more than
gibberish, unfortunately, as that number should be 50 +/- 1.

telemetry beacon around 145.972. Most of the time
there is no beacon at all. Sometimes there is
jibberish. Usually the signal is very weak.

QSO
via AO-7
which is a distance of 7,630 km between these two stations. (GG54jm -
KG43eu)
The mp3 clip shows the short window they had with good signals both ways.

Hello all,
I posted a short video with the contact maintained today with Andre, ZS2BK via
AO-7 in mode B ( Orbit 60848 - 19:47 UTC - 01/08/10 ). We keep the QSO with a
small window that the AO-7 has provided us. The window was only about 34 sec,
this time interval we could not match any comm
I am copying a very strong carrier on AO-7 as I write this...
435.106MHz , no signs of modulation. Planet Emily latest reports show the
transponder might be off... I didn't listen for myself... have to swap co-ax,
but I was busy trying to figure out if the carrier were definitely the old
girl,
at 23:11Z. RTTY is slightly audible, no idea if it is decodable or not.

Hello All,
Just heard AO-7's 70cm CW beacon sending valid telemetry (2010/03/14
07:25 UTC). Entering the data below into the spreadsheet gives a beacon
power output of 338mW. All else seems nominal.

I'm sure she has been - "in the old days," back in the 1970s when she was
still new to orbit. But tonight on the pass that reached the W4G Field Day
site about 0026 UTC, I heard more stations on AO-7 than I've heard in the

Anyone know the best distance for mode A on AO-7? Is there a "gate keeper" for
