Norman,
I acquired a M2 beam from someone who got out of satellites post-AO-40. I
have found it works very well, though of course being linearly polarized you
can get short dropouts. I have also used a home brew helix, but based on
performance have no plans to replace the M2.

i hate cross posting, so please don't shoot me :-]
i have built one of the 1296 as seen on this thread the person the posted it
had pictures:

it is the WA5VJB version, i have also built other versions
I have been using a homebrew helix that I built on the VE3NPC design.
It works quite well, and wasn't too expensive to build. Sorry I can't
remember how much I spent, but it was probably less than $50 easy.
Google VE3NPC and you should be able to find the design.

For terrestrial work I use a WA5VJB cheap Yagi, which works fine and
is cheap and easy to build. - Duffey

Nigel,
I don't think Bob has a website up at the moment but no doubt he will
read this thread and respond to any interested people.
As an aside, he also donates 20% (I think its 20%) of every sale to AMSAT.
I can send you pictures of mine if that helps (?)
