google is your friend. it seems that for whatever reason, there is no "instant" unlock. honestly i have no idea about the actual process under the covers but all of the services ask you to wait between 1-24 hours for the code, depending on the phone.
yes, as far as i know this the only way ... i've also heard the t-mo tech support will give you the unlock code if you've been a good customer, after 3 months. use your own judgement. i am sure there are at least some websites scamming people.
