Problem solved.
Solution: Needed to change java version. By deafult it was gij-4.2,
changed to java-6-sun and everything runs great.

I can't remember which section it's under but when you are in Software
Updates in Eclipse, when you list the remote sites, expand out the eclipse
ones and look for "enabling features" - you should find batik under there -
it's used for rendering images in reports in BIRT.
