One catch - using the eclipse plug-in for Android development:
[2009-02-17 21:16:42 - Emulator] failed to load image file
'[PATH_TO_YOUR_SKIN_DIRECTORY]//background.png'
background.png is actually named background.PNG. Changing the file
extension from .PNG to .png got it wo
