So I tried doing the first app tutorial from the web, the one that sends
text to one activity to another.
But I think i really suck at this.

I don't think you suck at this, I think you need to have a bit more
patience and remember that there is a learning curve here. First thing you
need to learn is probably how to read a stack trace like the one that
appears at the bottom of your logcat. In this case it is telling you that
you have
same thing is happening to me... I run it and the app comes up with nothing
but a white screen and the My First Activity title... I tried switching to
4.0... and it still didn't work...

I am using eclipse to develop with, just as bad as symbian.
I assumed, probably wrongly, that the eclipse android plugin would take
care of packaging.
I see there is an android httpclient class and wondered if the 3.1 apache
jar was not the right one. However

to add it to the app store and a free app.
I tested it on my phone and Zoom pad. it works as it should on those
two divices.
