I installed the HTC sync from the HTC website that includes an ADB
driver that works with the Eris. Remove the old driver and install
HTCSync.

Same here. HTC Droid Eris on XP32 SP2.
I notice the provided USB driver (http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-
usb.html) mentions the Droid, but not the Droid Eris. Maybe they just
haven't gotten around to it.
