rethink your approach then.
I am using am.isBluetoothA2dpOn() (to inject a half second silent sound
before my announcements in order to wake the BT speaker up) and that works
just fine.

Routing audio to bluetooth is the responsibility of the user. They can do
that in the phone settings. Long tap on the desired device, then "Choose for
BTStereo" or some such.
