I noticed a few apps use the convention:
External Storage Location/Android/data/package name
For example, Google Earth places its cache on my Nexus One at /sdcard/
Android/data/com.google.earth
Is this is a good standard to follow?

Everything you've said makes sense when we talk about internal
application files (configurations, temporarily storage whatever else).
However, there are few other cases. In my case I need to implement
backup/restore

Well as you have seen from your own experience there doesn't seem to
be any real convention. I would do whatever you find the most
convenient as a user. I personally like it when they make a folder
with the app name not the package name.

No official conventions exist as far as I know. It would be very anti-
social to store your files in the sd card root because of the clutter
it would cause (and I'm surprised that there are apps that do it). If
you're confident that your application's name will be unique, you
