I managed through help from Google (thanks!) make /system writeable by issuing adb remount. I also managed updating /system/etc/hosts so that the magical address 10.0.2.2 would point to my hosts symbolic name.
ping to the magical address works ping to the symbolic address does not - unknown host What am I missing here? Since these changes are only temporary, restart of the emulator is not an option either.
